Everything you need to run it: nothing

BOMs Away is for businesses that build things but don't need, or can't justify, an MRP or ERP system. The big packages come with licences, servers, upgrade projects and a consultant to set it all up. Here's the bill of materials for running BOMs Away instead.

What it does

The everyday work of a small manufacturer, from the parts list to the finished assembly on the shelf.

Bills of material, as deep as your products go

Build assemblies from subassemblies and purchased parts, then open the full tree in one view. Before you change a part, see every assembly it's used on.

Each part can have several vendor sources with their own part numbers, pack sizes and price breaks by quantity.

Know exactly what to order

Choose an assembly and how many you want to build, then click Compute. BOMs Away works through every level of the BOM, subtracts what's already on the shelf and lists the shortfall with vendor and cost.

Generate Purchase Orders turns that list into draft orders, one per vendor.

Purchase orders from draft to received

Take each order through approval and send the vendor a PDF with your logo and terms. Receive goods as they arrive, in part or in full, straight into the location they belong in.

Stock goes up as you receive, and the order closes once everything is in.

Build it, and the stock follows

Open a work order for an assembly and choose which subassemblies to build instead of taking them from stock. Kit each line from a stock location, then finish the assembly into inventory.

Cancel a work order and the kitted parts go back where they came from.

Stock you can find

Keep stock by location, move it between stockrooms and record cycle counts as you go. The dashboard lists the parts at or below their reorder point, so running out is never a surprise.

Start from your spreadsheets

Import parts, BOMs and stock from CSV files. A dry run shows what would change before anything is saved.

If any row has a problem, nothing is imported, and you get the line number and the reason so you can fix the file and try again.

Bring the whole team

Invite colleagues by email and they set their own password. Everyone can see everything; you choose who can change parts, vendors, purchasing or work orders.

The Users page: each person's name, email, role and edit permissions, with a pending invitation underneath

Also included

  • Search, sort and filter every list, and pick the columns you want to see.
  • Your own purchase order and work order numbering, with the date in it if you like.
